How do people in Derna welcome the Prophet's Birthday


 

 Every year on the twelfth of Rabi al- Awwal, people in Derna are welcoming the Prophet's birthday in their traditional way.
Usually, people start the preparations for this day from a week before, as making sweets and buying candles; in the way expressing their happiness for the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.


People get used at the night before to go to Al Sahaba, which is a place where seventy graves of Prophet's companions, and celebrate in the near yard. While children play and the whole place is lighted with lanterns. Some prefer to stay at home that night and decorate it with candles. This celebration may take few hours to end, and after that people go home to be ready to the next day.

  


On the early morning of this day, families meet together and greet each other as they do at Eid. Thus women make a porridge as a traditional dish contains of flour and water mixed together. Then when the porridge will be ready to eat, usually, some butter and date syrup or honey are poured over it.



Derna's inhabitants consider this day as an occasion to refresh the memory of the Prophet's Muhammad birthday in their hearts, by remembering how this day came to light their lives, and family kinship by visiting cousins, which is a significant rule that the Prophet encourages to follow.
